Kikuube District LC V Chairperson Banura Kyaligonza has died in a tragic road accident along the Kikube–Hoima road, authorities have confirmed.

Kyaligonza, who was serving as district chairperson and had also been elected to continue in the role, was reportedly struck by a commuter taxi, commonly known as a “drone,” in an incident that occurred this evening.

He was the son of Uganda’s Ambassador to Burundi, Matia Kyaligonza, a senior military officer and diplomat.

Preliminary reports indicate that the taxi rammed into bystanders including Banura who had made a stop over to interact with his electorates. Victims who were injured were rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. Authorities have not yet confirmed the total number of casualties.

Banura was widely described as humble, peaceful, and deeply patriotic. His death is seen as a significant loss to his family, the Obukama bwa Bunyoro Kitara, and the nation at large.

He was also a committed member of the Patriotic League of Uganda, a movement associated with General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Leaders and residents in Kikuube and beyond have begun expressing shock and grief following the sudden loss of the youthful leader, who had been seen as a rising figure in local governance.

Police are yet to issue a detailed statement on the cause of the accident as investigations continue.
