The Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, has today been elected unopposed as the District Chairperson of the Women’s League for Bukedea under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

Speaker Among cast her vote earlier in the day and participated in the party’s internal elections at the district level, which are currently ongoing across the country. Her unchallenged election underscores her strong grassroots support in Bukedea and her influential role both within Parliament and the NRM party structures.
The NRM is presently conducting nationwide elections to fill leadership positions from the village to district/city levels, a crucial exercise aimed at strengthening the party’s mobilization structures ahead of the 2026 general elections.

According to the NRM Electoral Commission, the elections are being held in phases, with village, parish, sub-county, and district-level structures electing leaders for various party leagues, including the Main, Women, Youth, Elders, and PWDs (Persons with Disabilities) leagues.

Speaking to supporters shortly after her election was confirmed, Speaker Among emphasized the importance of women’s participation in leadership:
“This is a call to serve, and I’m committed to using this platform to empower women, strengthen party structures, and promote development in Bukedea and beyond,” she said.
Political analysts view Among’s participation in the grassroots elections as a strategic move to solidify her influence within the NRM, particularly in light of ongoing internal realignments and succession debates ahead of the party’s national conference.
The NRM electoral process has so far been largely peaceful, although some districts have reported delays due to logistical challenges. The Electoral Commission has urged all members to adhere to party guidelines and maintain discipline throughout the process.
Speaker Among’s victory is expected to inspire other high-ranking leaders to actively participate in party mobilization at the grassroots level, in line with President Museveni’s longstanding emphasis on building the party “from the bottom up.”
