By Andrew Irumba

Masaka: The Kabaka of Buganda His majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II is not happy at all with government urban planners who refused to grant Masaka municipality city status.

The ministry of local government recently revealed preparations to grant several municipalities across  the country city status. Some of those granted city status include Gulu, Mbale, Arua, Entebbe, Lira, Fort Portal, Mbarara and Hoima. However, the Kabaka and several other people in Buganda were irked by the refusal of Local Government to grant Masaka municipality city status and many of them have already voiced their displeasure about this development. While expressing his unhappiness about this, Kabaka Mutebi, who was recently touring his Buddu Saza, where Masaka is found, said that;

“I wonder why Masaka was not granted city status, yet it has all the necessary requirements for a municipality to be elevated to city status.” Kabaka  Mutebi added that “Because of that, I shall have to consult with the people concerned with this matter and the experts in this thing to explain to me why Masaka was not granted city status, because I have failed  to understand it.” However, Kabaka Mutebi is not the first person to express his concern about this matter. So far, several politicians who include Masaka LC V chairperson, Masaka Municipality MP  Mathias Mpuuga, Mukono municipality MP Bett Nambooze and others have all expressed their dissatisfaction with government over denying Masaka city status.
