Kakindo Students Reject New Principal, Stage Massive Strike

By Micheal Atwakiire

Sheema: Students of St. Benedict’s Technical Institute Kakindo on Friday staged a demonstration, protesting against the new Principal who was recently appointed to head the institution.

The angry students said they want the technical board with immediate effect to bring back their old principal Benon Muhangi and vowed not to return to class if he doesn’t return soon.

Cops deployed at the Institute

Recently, Muhangi was transferred from Kakindo to another technical institute in Igara East constituency by government. The move forced the Kakindo Institute technical board to employ Noah Ruhinda as the new principal.

But students said that they only know Ruhinda as a carpenter and a senior coffin maker in Kakindo town council and that if he wants to join their technical, he should first sort himself up and wait up to next year.
“We cannot allow Ruhinda, who is just a carpenter. We encourange him to first finish his work of making coffins and then he joins us next year. If they don’t bring back Muhangi , we shall not go back to class!” Students vowed.

Other students alleged that Muhangi was transferred because he is not a Catholic and they decided to employ Ruhinda who is a Catholic, since Kakindo Technical Institue is a Catholic founded institution.

“Some leaders of the School like Vianney Muhwezi, who is the board chairman, is super-sectarian. Remember protestants and born agains outnumber Catholics in this institution, yet the administrators want everything to be Catholic. They chased our Principal becaue he is a Protestant and brought in their fellow Catholic.” Students were overheard saying.

While demonstrating, they moved to Kakindo Catholic parish church saying they were to surrender everything to God, although police dispersed them and forced them to return to school.

But instead of the students running away, they started singing different songs plus asking police to start shooting bullets and they danced. When police delayed to start shooting, students started pelting them with stones .

We tried reaching the Chairman Kakindo Technical Board, Vianney Muhwezi, who told us that they are about to solve the issue and refuted the allegations that he is sectarian.
