A devastating fire broke out this morning at the Kalita Bus Parking Yard, located near the Post Bank Kasese Branch, destroying property worth millions of Ugandan shillings. The fire, which started around 9:00 AM, quickly spread, engulfing vehicles and structures in the area and sending plumes of smoke into the sky.

Local residents, who were the first to respond, attempted to contain the blaze before the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and Police Fire Rescue Services arrived to assist with firefighting efforts. Despite their best efforts, the fire caused significant damage to the property, with many vehicles and goods being reduced to ashes.

Kigutiha Jafari, a concerned local resident, voiced frustration over the delayed response, pointing out the lack of a dedicated fire brigade in the region. “If it weren’t for the quick actions of the locals, the damage would have been much worse,” Jafari said. His sentiments were echoed by Safari Martin, the LC3 chairperson of Kasese, who stressed the vital role played by both the UPDF and local residents in fighting the fire.

However, the absence of a proper fire response system in the district remains a critical concern. Safari Martin reiterated the urgent need for a more effective fire response infrastructure to prevent future tragedies. “We have seen how crucial the cooperation between residents and the UPDF was today. Kasese needs a dedicated fire brigade to ensure swift action in emergencies like this,” he emphasized.

SP Nelson Tumushime, the spokesperson for the Rwenzori East Police, confirmed that authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire. However, he acknowledged that logistical challenges, including delays in response time, contributed to the extent of the damage.

As the dust settles and residents begin to assess their losses, local leaders are calling for increased fire preparedness and response mechanisms to protect both lives and property in the future. With the rising number of fire-related incidents, many believe that it is time for Kasese to invest in an effective fire management system to safeguard the community from such devastating events.
