Kasese Municipality witnessed heightened tensions today as hundreds of residents from Kidodo Cell took to the streets in a peaceful protest, accusing police of mishandling the case of a missing two-year-old child and prematurely releasing the prime suspect.

The demonstrations follow the disappearance of Mumbere Kismart, a toddler who went missing last Friday afternoon. The case, registered at Kasese Central Police Station under reference SD REF:02/05/04/2025, sparked public outrage after reports emerged that the main suspect—a woman who allegedly turned herself in on Monday—was released on police bond the same day.

Chanting slogans and waving placards, angry residents—both men and women—marched through Kasese town, accusing law enforcement of acting under “suspicious circumstances” and failing to prioritize justice and child safety.

Bwambale Godfrey Luke, the father of the missing child, expressed his anguish:

“The police let her go without even recovering my child—dead or alive. This has shocked and angered the entire community.”
Local leaders echoed the public’s frustration. Mr. Bashiru Bwambale and Councilor Sirewayo John condemned the police’s conduct, describing it as “bogus” and a “disgrace” to the force.

“We will not rest until the child is found and justice is served,” vowed Bashiru.

Protesters warned that the police’s actions not only undermined the seriousness of the case but also risked provoking mob justice amid growing anger and mistrust.
However, in a statement to the media, SP Nelson Tumushime, Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson, denied claims that the suspect had been released.
“She is still in custody, and investigations are ongoing,” he said.
Despite this assurance, the community has pledged to maintain pressure on authorities until Mumbere Kismart’s fate is known and accountability is secured.
