The Electoral Commission (EC) has cleared National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu and Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) leader Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu as candidates in the 2026 presidential race, marking a key step in the country’s electoral calendar.

The exercise, which is being conducted at the Commission’s new nomination centre in Lweza, Wakiso District, began with the appearance of Gen. Muntu in the morning. Accompanied by a small team of party officials, the former army commander presented his nomination papers and was duly cleared after verification of the required documents, including signatures from the stipulated number of districts.

Addressing journalists shortly after the process, Muntu said his candidature would focus on institutional reforms and rebuilding public confidence in government. “Our campaign will emphasise issues of governance, economic stability and national cohesion. Uganda needs to strengthen systems rather than individuals,” he noted.

In the afternoon, Kyagulanyi arrived with his team and was similarly cleared after presenting the necessary documentation. The NUP leader, who is seeking the presidency for the second time, called on the EC to guarantee fairness and transparency throughout the electoral process. “We are committed to a peaceful campaign and expect the Commission to uphold the principles of free and fair elections,” he said.

Unlike previous nomination exercises, members of the public and supporters of candidates were not allowed within the nomination grounds, a measure the EC said was aimed at ensuring order and compliance with security and health guidelines. Police maintained a visible presence along the access routes to the venue but reported no major incidents.
Justice Simon Byabakama, the EC chairperson, urged candidates to observe the electoral laws and to conduct their campaigns responsibly.
