Born on August 11, 1939, in Kinaba, Kinkizi District, Prof. Kanyeihamba’s life was defined by a relentless pursuit of justice, the rule of law, and academic excellence. From humble beginnings, he rose to become one of Uganda’s most respected jurists, scholars, and statesmen, leaving an indelible mark on the country’s legal and constitutional development.

Justice Kanyeihamba’s educational journey began at Kigezi High School and Busoga College Mwiri, after which he pursued legal studies abroad. He earned a Bachelor of Laws from Portsmouth University and later received a Doctorate of Laws from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom.

His distinguished public service career spanned decades and roles of great national significance. He served as a Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament and played a key role in shaping Uganda’s legal landscape as Chairperson of the Legal Committee during the Constituent Assembly that drafted the 1995 Constitution. In 1997, he was appointed to the Supreme Court, where he served with distinction for 12 years. He was also among the inaugural judges of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, reflecting his regional and international standing.
A man of letters as well as law, Prof. Kanyeihamba authored several influential works that contributed to the national and international discourse on governance, justice, and constitutionalism. His notable publications include Kanyeihamba’s Commentaries on Law, Politics and Governance (2006) and Constitutional and Political History of Uganda: From 1894 to Present (2010). He was particularly passionate about the rights of marginalized groups, writing extensively on refugee rights and the dignity of all individuals.
Beyond the courtroom and lecture halls, Prof. Kanyeihamba was a mentor and educator. He lectured at numerous institutions both within Uganda and abroad and served as Chancellor of Kampala International University and Kabale University. His influence shaped the careers of many legal professionals, academics, and public servants.
Throughout his life, he undertook a number of critical national assignments. Notably, he served as Legal Adviser to the President on Human Rights and International Affairs, and as Chairperson of the Committee on Judges’ Terms and Conditions of Service — a testament to his unwavering dedication to judicial integrity and reform.
Justice Kanyeihamba is remembered not just for his intellect and accomplishments, but also for his fearless defense of judicial independence, his principled stance on the rule of law, and his moral integrity. His passing is a profound loss to the judiciary, academia, and the nation at large.
The Judiciary of Uganda has extended heartfelt condolences to his family, the legal fraternity, the academic community, and to all Ugandans and international colleagues who were touched by his wisdom and service.
