Kampala: The National Resistance Movement Presidential flag bearer Kaguta Museveni has cautioned politicians preparing to cause violence before, during, and after the January 14 elections saying they will face the toughness of his armed men.
Museveni made the remarks after flagging off the construction of the 86km Mityana-Mubende road and the upgrading of roads in Mityana municipality on Wednesday.
Museveni noted that government will ensure the polls are peaceful throughout, noting that security will be on the lookout for anyone trying to cause violence and disrupt the peace that the NRM government has built for 35 years.
“Our task is keeping peace and I assure you that there will not be anyone who disrupts peace here,” Museveni said.
“We started talking about this long ago but some people don’t know our history as the National Resistance Army, just like Amin and Obote did as they thought we were joking.
Museveni noted that he has heard of some people with plans to disrupt the elections, noting that he has also been informed of people threatening others from participating in the polls and this is witnessed by some people currently fleeing the city ahead of 14 January polls in fear of violence that is likely to break out.
“Don’t get intimidated. Go and vote and no one will touch you. We shall get them (intimidators) from wherever they will be,” he said.
Museveni has been warning against violence in the forthcoming polls following the November 18 protests that erupted in various towns across the country after the arrest of the National Unity Platform presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi where over 50 people died and several others injured by security forces.
The President has in the past noted that Uganda has enough security organs to deal with anyone who tries to disrupt the country’s peace.
Museveni further urged Ugandans to support NRM basing on the achievements, not politicians who just talk with no action.
“You also have a duty to support the NRM because it has been able to stabilize Uganda. Many think the peace that Ugandans have enjoyed for 35 years is in mere words but we fought for it. That is another reason why the fourth job that our people have is supporting the NRM,” he said.
