U.S. first lady Jill Biden underwent a “successful” medical procedure on Thursday to remove debris lodged in her left foot from a puncture wound, a spokesperson said.

Biden stepped on the unknown object while walking on a beach during an official event in Hawaii over the weekend, spokesman Michael LaRosa said in a statement. The procedure was done at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where President Biden later joined her.

The president also accompanied his wife just three months ago for what the White House described as a “common medical procedure.” The administration did not provide details about the April incident, but it said she “tolerated the procedure well.”

The 70-year-old first lady visited Hawaii on Saturday and Sunday to promote COVID-19 vaccines at a high school and to attend a barbecue with military families at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. She flew there from Tokyo after joining the Olympics opening ceremony in her first solo international trip since her husband took office in January.

A journalist who traveled with Jill Biden for the two events in Hawaii, said she did not notice any obvious injuries during the trip.

“She wore a wedge-heel espadrille that day, and when we landed,” said a journalist, “It is entirely possible that whatever she encountered on the beach has become problematic over the last four days to the point of medical care.”

The first lady also visited Alaska last week as part of her vaccination campaign. She returned to Washington, D.C., on Sunday.

“Back home! Thank you Alaska, Japan, and Hawaii for showing me such kindness,” she said in an Instagram post. “@teamusa, I’ll be cheering you on from here!”
