President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has arrived at Karuziika Royal Palace in Fort Portal to attend the coronation of Tooro’s new King, Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I.

President Museveni is the chief guest at Tuesday’s historic ceremony, which formally marks the beginning of Nyabongo I’s reign as Omukama of Tooro. His attendance had earlier been confirmed by government ahead of the coronation.

The President was welcomed at Karuziika Hill by Tooro subjects dressed in traditional attire and performing amakondere, one of the kingdom’s traditional dances, as celebrations continued at the royal palace.

The coronation comes following the death of former King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV on August 27, 2026. The Babiito Royal Clan subsequently selected Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as his successor, with the Tooro Kingdom Supreme Council later endorsing the decision.

Nyabongo I has already undergone a series of traditional rites leading up to his formal coronation. On Monday night, he travelled from Rwengoma Palace to Karuziika in a symbolic procession through Fort Portal, accompanied by thousands of subjects. The ceremonies included traditional rituals and a mock battle at Mugabante, marking the transfer of royal authority.

President Museveni’s presence adds a significant national dimension to the ceremony, which has brought together members of the royal family, Tooro subjects, government officials and other invited guests.

The coronation marks a new chapter for the Tooro Kingdom as Nyabongo I assumes the mantle of leadership and succeeds the late King Oyo.
