By Peter Sebulime

Officials who were recently appointed to take up key offices in government have today interfaced with the Appointments Committee of Parliament, to complete the vetting process, before they take up their new roles.

Those who appeared before the committee today include the current Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Mike Chibita, who was appointed Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Flavian Zeija who was appointed Principle Judge and the Executive Chairman of Cipla Quality Chemical Industries Emmanuel Katongole, who was appointed Chairperson of the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC).

Others who were vetted for Supreme Court positions are Justice Ezekiel Kurabiraho Muhanguzi and Percy Night Tuhaise.

The same Committee also engaged Doreen Kabasindi Wandera, Francis Nagimesi, Biwaga Stella Marie, Irene Pauline Batebe, Godfrey Andama, Francis Twinamatsiko and Zulaika Mirembe Kasaija – who were appointed Members of the Petroleum Authority of Uganda board.

Moments after his appearance, Justice Mike Chibita told journalists that “I take pride in the reduction of the case backlog in the judicial system during my tenure as DPP, a success I attribute to the introduction of plea bargaining in courts across the country.”

He also mentioned the decentralization of court services, the introduction of the anti-corruption Court and the International Crimes Division as key milestones, but noted that underfunding the DPP is a setback to the administration of justice.
