Namugongo: As millions of pilgrims fill Martyr’s Shrine Namugongo for Martyr’s Day celebrations, some city pocket pickers have also shown that they are not off duty!

The latest coming in from Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire indicates that 34 suspects are already in cells over theft and issuance of counterfeit currencies.

”As the joint task teams continue to safeguard pilgrims at Namugongo for today’s Martyrs Day celebrations, we are also registering more people arriving at the Anglican and Catholic shrines,” says Luke adding;

”However, some of these are wrong elements. We have so far registered four cases of theft of phones, one of stealing from a motor vehicle and one of indecent assault at Anglican Shrine.”

He says that at the Catholic Shrine, they have registered 36 cases (35 thefts and one of issuing counterfeit currency).

Luke notes that they have so far arrested 34 suspects and they are detained at Kira Division Police Station.

”We thank the pilgrims for following the security guidelines and being peaceful. We want to assure the members of the public that we will continue to safeguard them as they celebrate Martyrs Day,” he added.

Uganda holds Martyrs’ Day celebrations at the Namugongo Martyrs’ Shrine every June 3rd.

Uganda’s Martyrs’ Day holiday commemorates the late 19th-century martyrdom of a group of 23 Anglican and 22 Catholic men who were ordered by then-King of Buganda Mwanga II to be put to death for having converted to Christianity. Attendance usually ranges from one to two million pilgrims from Uganda and neighboring countries, including Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania.
