The Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Minister Amelia Kyambadde, has released a list of certified energy drinks brands being sold in Uganda to Parliament.
Some of the nine certified energy drinks include; Power Play, Rock Boom, Riham X Energy, Sting Gold Rush and Sting Red Rush, Kirungi Kazi Booster, Canaan Bulls Energy Drink, Thunder Caffeinated Carbonated Energy Drink, and Yaket Energy drink.
All these drinks are know among Ugandans to increase sexual Energy or bedroom Stamina, reason why they are readily known as Energy Drinks.
But regardless of the list published by Minister Amelia Kyambadde, the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is about to explain why the list published on its website is quite different from the one of Kyambadde provided to Parliament, because many of these energy drinks are yet to be approved by UNBS laboratories.
According to Kyambadde’s statement to parliament, she showed the dangers of energy drinks, following a 20 August directive by the Speaker Rebecca Kadaga, after Kasambya County Member of Parliament (MP), Gaffa Mbwatekamwa raised a matter of national importance saying there are several energy drink brands on the market, which could cause health risks for people due to limited regulation.
Mbwatekamwa raised concern that there are over 50 brands of energy drink brand on the market and asked government to provide a list of certified energy drinks and their contents.
Kadaga concurred with Mbwatekamwa, saying that the high consumption rate of caffeinated energy drinks could cause addiction among other effects to consumers.
Mbwatekamwa and Butemba County MP Pentagon Kamusiime want immediate government intervention to regulate the energy drinks market.
