Kampala: The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health Dr. Diana Atwiine has cautioned the general public that government will have no choice but to institute a second national lockdown if the country is to deal with the second wave of Covid19.

Dr. Atwiine noted that Ugandans have completely forgotten about the Covid19 SOPs which has bred a second wave that is currently spreading like wildfire and the health system is already overwhelmed.

“We should stop massaging people’s ego, we should stop it and tell people the truth, the lockdown will return if people don’t change,” she said.

Atwiine made the remarks while speaking at Ernest Cook Ultrasound Research and Education Institute in Mengo yesterday on their 5th Graduation.

She noted that in most parts of the country, people are living a relaxed life, but calling upon the Government to come to their rescue after ignoring their own responsibilities.

“Some people even don’t wash their hands but continue asking the Government for help. If you don’t care for your life you will die and it will be yourself and your family to lose out not the Government.”

The PS on the other hand asked the security agencies in the country to double their efforts in enforcement of COVID19 standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Atwiine further revealed that the ministry has already taken over control of Mandela National Stadium (Namboole) to act as the treatment center for Covid 19 patients since most of the health facilities with the capacity to handle the situation are already overwhelmed.

President Yoweri Museveni is expected to address the nation to determine the next move about the surging cases of Covid19.
