Kampala: The Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II yesterday celebrated his 66th Birthday. This year’s Kabaka’s birthday was celebrated scientifically at Lubiri palace in Mengo, Kampala with a few invited guests mostly Kingdom officials due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kabaka Muwenda Mutebi resurfaced to the public after good months without physical appearance.
Now, yesterday since it is one of the days that are celebrated by the Kingdom, Kabaka Mutebi opted to appear physically although looking very ill and frail, something that raised questions among the Buganda fraternity leaving some of his subjects rubbing their wet eyes. “Oba b’amuwa butwa?” a passenger was heard wondering in a taxi while retiring back home along Wandegeya parking area, after the traffic lights.
These came following persistent rumors from last year to date that the King had been poisoned, although his Prime Minister, Charles Peter Mayiga in an address to the media categorically rubbished the rumors, saying the Kabaka was very well and fine. However, yesterday’s situation puts Katikiro Mayiga in a tricky situation on whether Baganda should continue believing his words.
Mayiga’s address came after reports circulated on different social media platforms alleging that the reigning Kabaka had been rushed to Aga Khan Hospital in neighboring Kenya after his health deteriorated as a result of alleged poisoning.
The rumors were also backed by a voice note from individuals who claimed to be Kabaka Mutebi’s relatives that were demanding to know the health status of their King.
Contrary to Mayiga’s statements, Kabaka Mutebi was seen the next few days in Kenya having a secret meeting with Uhuru Kenyatta and according to our sources, this meeting came after being discharged from the hospital.
