Uganda Registers 135998 Infections Amidst Escalating Omicron Cases

Kampala: Ministry of Health has announced that Uganda’s cumulative COVID-19 infections have escalated to 135,998 after confirming 907 new cases from tests of 26 December 2021.

The breakdown of the new cases is: 884 Alerts And Contacts: Kampala (500), Wakiso (205), Luweero (79), Mbarara (16), Soroti (19), Mayuge (7), Jinja (11), Adjumani (6), Iganga (4), Kitagwenda (4), Gomba (3), Hoima (4), Mbale (3), Gulu (2), Kamuli (2), Amuru (2), Wakiso (1), Kalaki (1), Mukono (1), Busia (3), Namisindwa (1) Tororo (2), Kyotera (14), 23 Truck drivers; Kyotera (17), Tororo (3), Busia (2), Kampala (1).

Uganda confirmed its first cases of the omicron coronavirus variant earlier this month.

Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng said then that cases could already be in the community, calling for increased surveillance to keep track of the circulating variant.

The omicron variant, first detected in the Southern African country Botswana on Nov. 11, has already spread rapidly across the globe with borders shutting and dozens of countries rolling out travel restrictions.

All these come few days to January when Uganda is set to fully open the economy and resume in-person education.
