Kampala: Shock engulfed Makerere University on Wednesday night after one of the students was attacked by unknown goons who clobbered and later robbed her, on top of allegedly sexually abusing her.

Siperia Molly Saasirabo, who is the Makerere University Guild Council Representative and the leader of the demonstration against hiked fees that kicked off Monday, is currently in hospital undergoing medical attention following the brutal attack.

Spy Uganda has established that Siperia was rushed to the said health facility (names withheld for security reasons) , by fellow students who were called to her rescue following the attack.

Siperia is badly off

While speaking about Siperia’s health condition Judith Nalukwago, who is the MUK Guild Vice President, said that “Siperia, a resident of Complex Hall, was attacked last night by unknown thugs, who brutalised her. Her condition is currently improving, although last night she was badly off. Medics gave her some prescription medicine and told us that the rest of the matters are private and that they will release a full report about her health condition after conducting some tests and a medical examinations.”

Nalukwago added that “However, we as female students are not safe. I wonder how such an attack could have happened at the University when there are police and military officers everywhere. Makerere is full of police and soldiers deployed all over Campus; how can a student be attacked and brutalised without any of the security officers knowing about it? I believe this is a targeted attack. Why is it that it was Siperia who was singled out. That means none of us is safe.”

She added that the students have vowed not to stop striking until the five demands they put on table are addressed. These include;scrapping the 15% cumulative tuition increment, releasing all arrested students, reinstating all students who were suspended, scrapping the Electoral Reforms that were introduced by the University Administration and improving sanitation at the University.

Meanwhile neither the University Administration nor the police have come out to issue a statement about Siperia’s brutal attack and alleged gang rape.

Siperia’s made headlines early this week after making a record by leading the first ever Female-led strike at Makerere University.

It should be noted that the strike against tuition increment has entered day three, after our Spy revealing that the police are currently running battles with MUK students, who have since started staging road blocks and riots in areas of Kikoni, Nakulabye, Bwaise and other places around the University.
