President Yoweri Museveni has agreed to endorse his son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for the presidency in the 2031 General Election, according to Kasambya County Member of Parliament Daudi Kabanda.
Kabanda made the announcement on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, during a press conference at the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) offices in Kampala, where he addressed journalists and Members of Parliament about Gen Kainerugaba’s political plans.
According to Kabanda, Gen Kainerugaba, who is the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chairman of the PLU, has confirmed his intention to contest for the presidency for the 2031–2036 term.
“General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has told me to inform you that he will run for President 2031–2036,” Kabanda said.
Kabanda, who heads the Office of the PLU National Chairman, further claimed that President Museveni had agreed to support and endorse his son’s presidential ambitions in the next general election.
“I would like to also let you know that His Excellency the President has promised to endorse Afande MK come the next general elections in 2031,” he said.
The announcement adds fresh momentum to Gen Kainerugaba’s increasingly public political ambitions and could shape discussions within Uganda’s ruling political establishment ahead of the 2031 elections.
Gen Kainerugaba publicly declared his intention to seek Uganda’s highest political office last week, signalling his determination to transition from his current leadership roles in the military and PLU into national electoral politics.
“I will stand for the highest office in the land in 2031. And we will win by the grace of Almighty God,” Gen Kainerugaba wrote on X.
The latest declaration comes five years before the 2031 presidential election and is expected to generate significant political debate over the future leadership of Uganda and the succession question within the ruling establishment.
For now, Kabanda’s statement places President Museveni’s reported endorsement at the centre of the emerging 2031 political conversation, although the endorsement remains a claim made publicly by the PLU official.
