Lawyers of Kaweesa, the owner of Another Rap song have written to president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni demanding him to pay Shs 5bn for using his song for campaigning.
Through his lawyers of M/s Muwema and Company Advocates, Mr. Richard Kaweesa has demanded Museveni to ‘compensate’ him for using his song.
Kaweesa argues that his song helped President Museveni win the hearts of many voters, thus accumulating billions of shillings in royalty fees.
“This song also became a popular ringtone which was obtained in all mobile telecommunication platforms and enhanced the top of the mind awareness of your brand to the Ugandan populace while making billions of shillings in royalty fees in the process,” Kaweesa’s lawyers wrote to Museveni.
“It is the reason we hold that the politico-commercial value and mileage you extracted from the said song is very substantial and indisputable,” they added
The royalty fees payable to Kaweesa have been estimated at Shs 5bn, according to the artiste’s lawyers.
Close to 10 years after Museveni used the Kaweesa’s song to make his ‘Another Rap or Mp’enkoni’, Kaweesa says he will not be stopping the three-decade president from using the song.
“Our client considers that it would be unfair to take away the copyright ownership of this song from you at this stage and will therefore not be seeking the cancellation of its copyright registration which is in your names unless it becomes necessary,” Kaweesa’s lawyers further wrote in their notice to Museveni on October 30.
