Peter Musinguzi, the pioneer political head of Bunyangabu District following its creation in 2017, has been elected LCV Chairperson after overwhelmingly defeating incumbent James Ategeka Mugarama in the 2026 Local Government elections. 
According to the official Declaration of Results issued by the Electoral Commission on Friday, January 23, 2026, Musinguzi secured 26,077 votes, representing 68.85 percent of the total valid votes cast. The incumbent, Ategeka Mugarama, polled 12,081 votes (30.97 percent), while Wilson Byamugisha garnered 297 votes (0.78 percent). Results were received from all 272 polling stations in Bunyangabu District, accounting for 100 percent submission.
The declaration further indicates that out of 39,430 total votes cast, 39,006 were valid, with 424 invalid votes recorded. Bunyangabu District has 106,325 registered voters.
Mugarama’s defeat marks a dramatic political reversal. After failing to secure the NRM parliamentary ticket in the party primaries, he retreated to the LCV race, setting up a rematch with Musinguzi. However, voters appeared unconvinced by the incumbent’s record, particularly on persistent poor road infrastructure and chronic water shortages—issues that dominated the campaign and are widely believed to have sealed his political fate.
Attention now turns to Musinguzi’s return to office, with residents closely watching whether his second tenure will deliver tangible improvements in service delivery, especially in road access and clean water provision—longstanding challenges that ultimately shaped Bunyangabu’s electoral verdict.
