In a landmark personal and professional achievement, celebrated Ugandan journalist and political commentator Kungu Al-Mahadi Adam—commonly known as Adam Kungu—has this Saturday morning graduated with a Master of Science in Mass Communication (MSc. MC) from Kampala International University (KIU).

Kungu, 33, who commands significant influence across Uganda’s media sphere, especially as the host of NBS Barometer and NBS Eagle on NBS TV, as well as Morning Xpress on Sanyuka TV, was among the distinguished graduands at KIU’s Western Campus in Ishaka, Bushenyi. The convocation coincided with the university’s silver jubilee, adding symbolic resonance to his academic milestone.

A multifaceted media practitioner and current station manager at Minister Balaam Barugahara’s Radio 4, Kungu has long been celebrated for his incisive political discourse and no-holds-barred interviews. His latest academic credential amplifies not only his credibility but also his intellectual contribution to Uganda’s evolving political consciousness.

Kungu’s postgraduate journey commenced in April 2023 and culminated in the successful defence of a compelling thesis titled “International Media Propaganda and the News Coverage of Ethiopia’s Tigray Conflict.” His research interrogated the hegemonic structures underpinning global media narratives and highlighted the disproportionate, often politicized framing of African conflicts.

“The genesis of this thesis was my discontent with reductive, ethnocentric portrayals of African conflict zones by international media outlets,” Kungu stated. “I aimed to deconstruct these biases and advocate for a more contextually grounded, pan-Africanist approach to conflict reporting.”

His academic feat is all the more commendable given the dual rigors of managing a fast-paced broadcasting career while pursuing an intellectually demanding program. Kungu admitted that the balancing act was formidable, requiring “exceptional time discipline, psychological resilience, and epistemological curiosity.”

“Covering late-night broadcasts and simultaneously meeting thesis deadlines was both draining and rewarding,” he reflected. “Delving into polarized narratives around Tigray deepened my resolve to anchor journalism in empirical integrity and ethical responsibility.”

Since launching his career in 2016 as a political correspondent at The Sunrise Newspaper, Kungu has meticulously carved a niche for himself within Uganda’s Fourth Estate. His editorial stints at SoftPower News and Plus News Uganda sharpened his analytical focus on regional geopolitics, particularly in the Horn of Africa.

In 2019, he pivoted to broadcast journalism, bringing his penetrating insights to the airwaves via Top Radio and Television, and later BaBa TV and Radio 4, where he emerged as a formidable voice on matters of governance, public policy, and regional diplomacy.

By 2023, his appointment as Radio 4’s station manager marked a strategic transition into media leadership—tasked with content curation, audience expansion, and institutional branding. That same year, he was recruited by Next Media, joining Uganda’s most influential broadcast conglomerate.

Beyond national borders, Kungu has reported from Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia, providing on-the-ground coverage of complex conflicts while championing journalistic objectivity. He has frequently cautioned against media-induced escalation of tensions.

“Framing wars through a binary lens distorts the intricacies of local realities,” he asserted. “Responsible journalism must navigate nuance, especially in volatile terrains.”

Reflecting on his educational journey, Kungu attributed much of his intellectual and professional maturation to his time at KIU—both as an undergraduate and postgraduate student in Mass Communication.

“KIU’s rigorous emphasis on research, fieldwork, and production offered me a robust foundation for the multifarious demands of modern journalism,” he affirmed. “Its multicultural campus also fostered an expansive worldview and sharpened my socio-political sensitivity.”

Kungu’s newest academic credential consolidates his standing as a thought leader at the intersection of media, governance, and civic engagement.

“This degree is more than a personal triumph,” he concluded. “It reaffirms my commitment to deploying journalism as a vehicle for truth, justice, and transformative change across Uganda and the continent.”

Now,here at TheSpy Uganda,Kungu is a behind-the Scenes advisor and comrade, wishing him all the best in his career is in perfect shape and order. Congratulations 🎉 🎉 👌🙏🙏🎈🎈🎂📚📚
