According to sources on Friday, May 19, after the ICC accused President Vladimir Putin for possible war crimes, Russia put Karim Khan, the prosecutor for the court, on its wanted list.

According to sources, Khan’s picture and personal information are searchable on the Interior Ministry’s database, but the ministry’s entry does not say the crime Khan is charged with.

With regard to the alleged war crime of forcibly deporting Ukrainian children, the Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Putin and his commissioner for children’s rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, in March.

On the basis of the ICC’s “illegal” decision to demand Putin’s arrest, Russia’s Investigative Committee, which looks into serious crimes, launched a criminal investigation against Khan in March.

Khan was under investigation, according to the Investigative Committee, for “criminal prosecution of a person known to be innocent… and preparation of an attack on a representative of a foreign state enjoying international protection.”

Since the invasion on February 24, 2022, more than 19,000 Ukrainian children have been sent to Russia, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin, described the ICC last month as “a puppet in the hands of the so-called collective West,” alluding to Putin’s arrest order.
