Kampala: Residents of Lungujja, Rubaga Division were on Tuesday night left in shock after unidentified thugs killed a student of Nkozi University identified as Raphael Walugembe.

According to eyewitness, the deceased was followed by unknown gunmen as he returned from his parents’ home, going to spend a night at his sister’s house. However, the residents blamed Lugunjja police for not responding in time because cops from Nateete Police station were the first to report to the crime scene. When contacted, Kampala Metropolitan Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said that. “The information about this murder case was received by the OC Station Nateete at around 10:00pm on Tuesday and they responded urgently upon receiving this information.” He noted however that the suspects were able to flee from the scene without being identified. The case was registered at Nateete Police station vide file number SD 62/14/5/19 AGG Robbery and Murder. The deceased was driving a Toyota Spacio registration number UAY 480U, Black in color as reported by Police. Furthermore, the thugs attacked a mobile money agent identified as Denis Mwesigwa together with his wife and robbed them of Shs610,000  plus  their mobile phones.

Mourners at Walugembe’s parents’ home

Armed robberies have continued happening in Kampala despite the installation of CCTV cameras and deployment of Local Defence Unit personnel in nearly all city suburbs. In March, thugs attempted to break into a branch of Barclays Bank. Sources said that hooded men broke the glass window of the bank’s branch in Nakulabye, Rubaga Division, and attempted to gain access but failed due to the burglar proofs. Last month, thugs armed with a SMG rifle and a pistol robbed a supermarket and mobile money outlet at Mpererwe on Gayaza Road. Tight Security guard Pilson Okot, who was guarding the supermarket was shot dead. Police said later that  they were unable to capture the incident on the Police CCTV cameras in the area because they aren’t yet operational.
