The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has appealed to the Minister of ICT and National Guidance for urgent intervention following the closure of Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda’s media outlets, warning that the continued shutdown could have far-reaching implications for the country’s media industry, democracy and investment climate.
In a letter dated June 28, 2026, addressed to the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, NAB expressed concern over the closure of NTV Uganda, Spark TV, Dembe FM, KFM, Daily Monitor and The EastAfrican, all operated by Nation Media Group Uganda.
The broadcasters’ umbrella body said it was seeking an urgent meeting with the minister to discuss the matter and explore a resolution through dialogue.
“As the sector ministry responsible for policy and regulatory oversight of the media industry, your office plays a pivotal role in ensuring a stable and predictable operating environment for broadcasters,” NAB Chairperson Innocent Nahabwe wrote.
The association said it was particularly concerned by reports indicating that the affected media houses would not resume operations without the permission of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), arguing that such a situation risks undermining Uganda’s media industry and the country’s democratic credentials.
According to NAB, the continued closure could also negatively affect investor confidence and the tourism sector, both of which depend on Uganda’s international image as an open and stable destination.
“We respectfully request a meeting with you at your earliest convenience to discuss this matter and explore avenues for an amicable resolution through dialogue,” the association said.
NAB further emphasized that any concerns regarding media content or conduct should be addressed through consultation, due process and in accordance with Uganda’s laws rather than prolonged closure of media outlets.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance to promote a responsible, lawful and vibrant media environment.
The letter was copied to the Minister of State for ICT, the Minister of State for National Guidance, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, and Nation Media Group Uganda.
The appeal comes amid growing concern from media stakeholders over the suspension of NMG’s broadcasting and publishing operations, with calls mounting for a swift resolution that safeguards press freedom while addressing any regulatory concerns through established legal frameworks.
