National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro has alleged that his recent arrest was politically motivated and orchestrated by Nakawa East MP aspirant Michael Kabaziguruka, who also serves as chairperson of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) Electoral Commission.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday morning as he was presented before Kawempe Magistrate’s Court in Kanyanya for formal charges, Waiswa claimed that security operatives had detained him since Monday and pressured him to abandon his support for NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) — a demand he says he refused.

“While in detention, they asked me to stop supporting Robert Kyagulanyi, which I declined. I believe my arrest is politically motivated and driven by my rivals,” Waiswa stated.

He further denied allegations that he was involved in the parade organised by NUP at their Makerere-Kavule headquarters earlier in February, which authorities have declared illegal.

“I was not part of the parade as I was not even around at the time,” he added.

Waiswa’s arrest comes amid a widening crackdown on NUP members. On Monday, five more party members — Tasi Calvin (Bobi Giant), Lukenge Sharif, Nyanzi Yasin, Kaweesi Tonny, and Ssemakula Edwin — were added to the charge sheet. They join Edward Ssebuufu (Eddie Mutwe) and Achileo Kivumbi, who were the first to be charged. The case has been adjourned to September 29, 2025.

On Tuesday, UPDF spokesperson Maj. Gen. Felix Kulayigye reiterated the army’s position, saying that all those who participated in the alleged illegal parade “will be brought to court.”

Kabaziguruka has not yet responded to Mufumbiro’s accusations.
