Panic: 47 Chinese In Uganda Test COVID-19 Positive As Total Cases Skyrocket To 21,898

Kampala: A total of 47 Chinese workers for a project contracted by an Indian company in Uganda have tested positive for  COVID-19, the Chinese embassy in Uganda said through reports today.

The embassy didn’t specify when the Chinese workers tested positive but said several of the 47 Chinese developed symptoms including fever, coughing, fatigue and diarrhea, while others are currently asymptomatic.

The embassy said it had contacted the Indian company to provide the necessary support for the Chinese employees and protect their safety and health.

Uganda has been reporting about 2,000 new COVID-19 cases per week, as multiple government departments and hospitals have reported cluster infections, said the embassy thus  urging  local Chinese to be cautious and refrain from social gatherings.

The development comes after the Ministry of Health yesterday confirmed 286 new COVID-19 cases results from tests done on 3 December 2020, bringing the cumulative confirmed cases to 21,898.

The breakdown of the new cases were: 286 contacts and alerts: Kampala (248), Buyende (17), Kamuli (12), Wakiso (5), Kiruhura (2), Jinja (1) and Kyotera (1).
