Algeria’s towering legacy in Africa’s liberation history and its continued role in championing Pan-African ideals earned it the prestigious “Most Distinguished Pan-African of All Times Award” at the Pan African Pyramid (PAP) Global Awards and 11th Anniversary Dinner held on Saturday.
This award was received by Algerian High Commissioner to Uganda H.E. Amokrane Mourad on behalf of his country.
The recognition celebrates Algeria not only as Africa’s largest country by land area, but also as an enduring symbol of resistance, unity, and self-determination.
Algeria’s Pan-African journey is rooted in its brutal war of independence against French colonialism, which lasted from 1830 to 1962. The revolution, spearheaded by the National Liberation Front (FLN), cost the lives of up to 1.5 million Algerians but gave birth to a free nation that inspired the continent.
After independence, Algiers quickly became known as the “Mecca of Revolutionaries,” offering sanctuary, resources, and military support to liberation movements across Africa, including South Africa’s ANC, Mozambique’s FRELIMO, Angola’s MPLA, and Namibia’s SWAPO. This unwavering solidarity positioned Algeria as a frontline state in the dismantling of colonial regimes.
Beyond Africa, Algeria extended its revolutionary spirit to Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East, making it a central pillar in the Global South’s fight for decolonization and sovereignty.
Algeria was also a strong pillar of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), championing economic independence, South–South cooperation, and the reclamation of Africa’s natural resources. Today, Algeria continues to push for African integration through frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), while maintaining its strong voice for peace, dignity, and sovereignty.
Speaking at the awards, the Pan African Pyramid founding speaker and chairman, comrade Andrew Irumba Katusabe commended Algeria’s unwavering commitment to Pan-Africanism. “Whenever Africa has risen against colonialism and exploitation, Algeria has not just stood by—it has sacrificed. Its legacy continues to light the path of unity, dignity, and independence for generations,” he noted.
This recognition cements Algeria’s position as one of the continent’s greatest champions of freedom, justice, and Pan-African solidarity.
