Pharmacist Netted For Stealing Gov’t Drugs

Bugiri: A pharmacist in Eastern Uganda has been arrested over allegations of stealing government drugs from a hospital where she is employed.

Aisha Kitimbo, the Bugiri hospital pharmacist, was arrested together with Joram Waiswa, a volunteer, on Thursday, over allegations of drug theft.  James Mubi, the Busoga East police spokesperson, says that “Some government drugs were recovered from Waiswa’s residence within Bugiri town.” Their arrest came after police got a tip-off from a Whistleblower that the two suspects had connived to steal 11 tins of Antimalarial drugs and 136 blood pressure drugs known as Artovarstine. Their trouble however started when a nurses at the hospital searched for the drugs to give them to patients in vain, which prompted them to alert the police.

On Thursday, Kitimbo and Waiswa were detained at Bugiri Central Police Station for further investigations. The hospital administrators however declined to comment about the matter, although, Kitimbo claims that the allegations against her are false and baseless. “I am a trained pharmacist who cannot steal drugs meant to treat my patients, and I believe that all those allegations against me are false, but I am ready to be investigated by police,” Kitimbo said. However, the police are still conducting investigations after which they will forward the file to the Resident State Attorney (RSA) for legal advice after which they will produce the suspects in court to face charges lodged against them.
