Police in Kampala Metropolitan Area have arrested 10 suspects in a targeted security operation aimed at dismantling criminal gangs operating in and around Kira Municipality.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala, the operation was conducted by officers from Kira Police Division in coordination with sister security agencies on the night of January 29, 2026, at about 10:00 p.m. The crackdown focused on the Buwate–Najjera area, a location police say has recently experienced criminal activity linked to drug abuse.

During the operation, the suspects were found inside a wooden structure allegedly smoking suspected narcotic substances. Police recovered several exhibits from the scene, including rolled sticks and powdered leaves believed to be narcotics.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects reportedly consume narcotic substances before engaging in criminal acts such as waylaying pedestrians and stoning moving vehicles, posing a serious risk to public safety.

The suspects are currently being held in police custody as investigations continue. A case of possession of narcotic substances, specifically opium, has been registered against them and they are expected to be produced in court.

Ms Kawala emphasized that police operations will continue both during and after the election period as part of broader efforts to maintain law and order across the Kampala Metropolitan Area.

She urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities, noting that community support remains critical in the fight against crime.
