A suspected fraudster who allegedly duped unsuspecting members of the public by posing as a government official to process motor vehicle transactions has been arrested.

According to the Ministry of Works and Transport, the suspect, identified as Richard Kalema, had been impersonating ministry staff and falsely promising to facilitate motor vehicle ownership transfers and acquisition of number plates in exchange for money.

Kalema reportedly confessed to the crimes following his arrest during an operation conducted with support from the Uganda Police Force. He is currently detained at Jinja Road Police Station as investigations continue.

The Ministry warned members of the public against dealing with unauthorized individuals, particularly agents and middlemen operating outside official premises. Citizens seeking services have been advised to transact only with duly authorized staff stationed at designated service desks at the Motor Vehicle Registration Offices in Nakawa.

Officials emphasized that payments for government services should never be made to personal accounts or through informal channels, urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious individuals to the relevant authorities.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to working closely with security agencies to dismantle criminal networks targeting citizens seeking government services.
