Police in Kampala have arrested a suspect linked to a string of motor vehicle number plate thefts that had alarmed motorists in the Maganjo Policing Area earlier this year.

According to police, the thefts were first reported in January 2026, with several victims complaining that unknown individuals had stolen their number plates and later left behind a telephone contact demanding money in exchange for their return.

The suspect, identified as Mugerwa Umaru, 29, was arrested during a police foot patrol operation in the early hours of March 12, 2026.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Luke Owoyesigyire, said the arrest was made at around 2:00am along Mau Jinja Kaloli Road in Maganjo B after officers intercepted the suspect during routine patrols.

“Upon search, the suspect was found in possession of suspected breaking implements, papers bearing the telephone contact used in the extortion scheme, and a SIM card linked to the same number,” Owoyesigyire said.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted involvement in the scheme and led officers to locations where stolen number plates had been hidden.

Police later recovered 17 stolen motor vehicle number plates concealed in bushes in Jinja Kaloli and Kilokole Zone in Kawempe Division.

Owoyesigyire noted that the suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue to determine whether he was working alone or as part of a larger criminal network targeting motorists.
He also urged vehicle owners to remain alert and immediately report suspicious activities to nearby police stations.
“Motorists are advised to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious incidents to police to help curb such criminal acts,” he said.
The police have assured the public that operations will continue in the area to dismantle criminal groups involved in theft and extortion targeting motorists.
