Police Arrest Two Armed Robbers In Bweyogerere, Recover Guns

Kampala: Uganda Police have intercepted and arrested two armed robbers near Total Petrol Station Bweyogerere alleged to have been heading to Njeru Municipality, Buikwe District.

Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, said that the arrested suspects were found with an AK 47 rifle with 12 rounds and have already been transferred to Central Police Station (CPS)-Kampala.

Onyango said the suspects who were travelling on two motorcycles were intercepted in wee hours of Wednesday 14 August following an intelligence tip-off.

Police said the thugs four in number but two of whom escaped with bullet wounds were heading to rob somebody in Njeru town but information was received in earlier about their planned criminality.

Onyango explained that Kampala Metropolitan crime intelligence team stationed at strategic points and immediately trailed the thugs until a fierce fire exchange ensued at Bweyogerere.

The suspects were first detained at Bweyogerere police station but then transferred to CPS on Thursday for further interrogation. Their TVs motorcycle was also impounded.

Onyango said Bweyogerere police and some of crime intelligence personnel have launched a hunt for the suspects who escaped on a second motorcycle. 

It was not clear whether the thugs target was a mobile money operator, a factory, prominent person or businessperson.

At least 10 people have been killed in Kampala and its outskirts between May and July by armed thugs moving on motorcycles. 

Flying Squad Unit (FSU), Crime Intelligence (CI) and Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) arrested three Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) deserters in connection to armed robberies. They have since been charged in the military court.
