Police Equips Female Officers With Leadership Skills

The Uganda Police have embarked on a campaign to equip all officers with leadership skills, as a way of empowering them, furthering community policing and promoting gender equality.

In a continued effort by the police leadership to implement the gender policy, police officers on Friday concluded a three-week transformation leadership course at the Police Senior Command and Staff College, Bwebaja.

The course was aimed at preparing more women officers to take up command and leadership positions in the force.

The officers passed out on Friday include 30, of these 27 women and 3 men .

The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Major General Sabiiti Muzeyi presided over the closing ceremony and handed certificates to the successful candidates.

He encouraged officers to work hard towards their targets.

Gen. Sabiiti said that “As a leader, whether male or female, there are lessons you need which are similar to the principals of marksmanship, One of them is to prepare (identify your target), focus (aim ), implement (shoot) , evaluate (follow through).”

He added that “Build teams and skill them. There is no leadership that does not meet obstacles but when you meet an obstacle behave like water, examine your internal weaknesses and fight them, assess your your strength and keep your eyes on your target.”

He tasked participants to put to good use to what they learnt by practicing, mobilizing and not to pull down their colleagues.

The course was held under the theme: ‘Towards a more gender responsive and effective police force’

The facilitation team led by MUBS Principal, Prof. Waswa Balunywa, said participants were taken through several topics including socialization process, sexual abuse and exploitation, challenges women in UPF face, leadership and management in organizations, communication skills, career planning, team work and healthy living.

We have learnt that the course was sponsored by United Nations Women organisation.
