Police Intensifies Boda Boda Crack Down, Over 500 Charged

The traffic police in Kampala have charged more than five hundred motorists and taken them to court on charges of Careless riding, ridding without a valid permit, riding a motorcycle without license among others.

According to the officer in charge traffic at central police station Kampala ASP Luyima Julius, the massive crack down on Boda bodas in the city befell after the president had complained on their bad use of the road saying that they have started scaring investors in the city and therefore instructed the police to take immediate charge such that the situation is controlled.

ASP Luyima told www.spyuganda that ever since they started the operations, police have managed to arrest, charge and prosecute on average thirty riders while others are being issued tickets of express penalty.

Luyima added that the most common offense these riders are facing is inconsiderate ridding which include violating traffic lights, ridding on pavements, unnecessary turnings and ridding on one way.

“We have not soo much arrested riders for helmets, PSV and permits but we majored on careless riding because it is the most cause of accidents in the city”, Luyima added.

According to the partial statistics on accidents, on average central police station receive 10 cases of serious accidents, fatal not daily but they receive like 3 in a week and more than twenty cases of minor cases.

Luyima also named the black spot areas saying that these are places of confusion that are highly associated with accidents. Such areas include shell-shop rite junction, clock tower, Jinja road traffic lights and Entebbe Road. The most case of accidents in such areas is violation of traffic lights.

He advised all the ridders to abide by the rules and regulations on road safety act such that they can be relieved on the charges.
