Entebbe: A Uganda Police officer has Friday been charged with the murder of Joshua Rushegyera Nteireho, who was president Yoweri Museveni’s nephew, and Merinah Tumukunde, with whom he was guned down along the Entebbe Expressway in September.

Constable Davis Taremwa, who appeared before the magistrates court in Entebbe, was charged with two counts of murder, over the shooting of Rushegyera and Tumukunde, who were shot dead by unknown people as they cruised in a Land Cruiser Prado registration number UAW 534B.

Prosecution told court that September 5, 2019, Taremwa, and others still at large, murdered Joshua Ruhegyera Nteireho and Merinah Tumukunde, at Nambigirwa bridge along the Entebbe Expressway.

Taremwa was arrested after his gun was found at the crime scene by police detectives, alhtough he failed to explain how it had gotten there.

He later told the police that Rushegyera had picked him from Hidden Treasure Hotel in Entebbe and taken him to Millennium hotel in Zzana, where they met a one Robert Suubi for a transaction.

Taremwa revealed that the transaction involved the sale of a motor vehicle a Toyota Harrier at Shs25m.

However, Taremwa said that later Rushegyera left him at the hotel with Suubi and drove away with his gun. Shortly after, Rushegyera was reported dead, after being shot together with Tumukunde, under unclear circumstances.

It should be noted that no government security officer is allowed to part with his gun for any reason under any circumstaces unless ordered by a senior commanding officers to do so. It is thus not yet clear under what circumstances Taremwa allowed Rushegyera, a civilian, to go away with his gun, after purportedly leaving him at the hotel.

Prosecution led by the Resident State Attorney Arnold Lukwago said that investigations in the case were not complete.

However, Entebbe Grade One Magistrate Joanita Muwanika did not allow Taremwa to take plea since his case is of a capital and can only be heard by the High Court.

Magistrate Muwanika thus remanded Taremwa until November 18, 2019 when his case will come up again for mentioning.
