Police Speak Out On Trigger Happy Cop Who Shot LDU, Colleague Dead

The Uganda police have finally spoken out about an errant policeman who shot his colleague and Local Defence Unit (LDU) operative dead, before turning the gun onto himself.

According to the Kampala metropolitan police deputy spokesperson, Mr Luke Owoyesigyire, the incident happened after a heated argument ensued between police constable Ben Ojilong and Cpl Alex Opito on how to proceed with a case.

A statement released by the deputy Metropolitan Police Spokesperson about the incident reads thus;

“Today 11/02/2020 at about 03:25PM at Bunamwaya Community Police Station in Makindye Sabagabo, Kampala, there was an unfortunate incident of double murder and suicide.

It is alleged that Police Constable No. 53443Ojilong Ben had a heated argument with his colleague No. 3007 Cpl Opito Alex on how to proceed with a case. Constable Ojilong reportedly picked his gun and shot  Opito several times, killing him instantly.”

He added that “One Local Defence Unit (LDU) personnel that was passing by was seriously wounded in the process . Ojilong later committed suicide by shooting. The LDU that had sustained injuries was later pronounced dead on arrival at Kitebi Health Centre.

The territorial police of Kampala Metropolitan South responded to the Scene and are actively investigating the incident. The gun and cartridges have been recovered, bodies have also been taken to City mortuary Mulago for postmortem.”

Oweyesigire concluded that; “We also like to extend our condolences to the families of the deceased officers and also our sister security agency the UODF who have been supervising the LDU officer. You will be progressively informed of any new details in the matter.”
