President Museveni Announces A 14-day Nationwide Mourning For Magufuli

President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has declared a 14-day period of mourning in honor of the deceased leader of Tanzania John Pombe Magufuli who died last week.

In a statement penned by President Museveni, he described the death of Magufuli as a “terrible moment for all advocates of African independence of thought and action”.

“In honor of the late President Dr John Pombe Joseph Magufuli and as a mark of solidarity with the government and people of the United Republic of Tanzania at this sad moment, I Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda, do hereby proclaim that…The Republic of Uganda shall join the United Republic of Tanzania in observing a period of mourning for 14 days,” Mr Museveni’s proclamation reads in parts.

President Museveni further noted that Uganda’s flags with that of the East African Community shall be flown at half-mast throughout Uganda’s missions abroad for two weeks.

“Magufuli was a true friend of Uganda and committed champion of the East African integration and advancement, and of African sovereignty and dignity,” said Museveni.

It’s worth noting that Magufuli’s death came after few months when the duo had just finished signing East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project deal that will see the region transforming financially.

The 1,445-km (900-mile) East African Crude Oil Pipeline, costing $3.5 billion, would pass through neighbouring Tanzania to the Indian Ocean port of Tanga.

Museveni then said, “In principle, we agreed that our governments expedite the harmonization of pending issues in the spirit of the East African Community (EAC), the remaining agreements are fast-tracked including the Tanzanian HGA and we quickly carry out the implementation of EACOP project.”

In the same vein, Tanzania announced that it was looking to build a pipeline to pump natural gas to neighbouring Uganda, a sign that both leaders had mutual friendship aimed at developing the region—-RIP Magufuli.
