Priest Hacked To Near Death By Son Over Land

Kabale: Shock gripped people in Kabale municipality on Wednesday after a priest was hacked by his biological son, after he refused to give part of his land.

The priest identified as Rev. Stephen Munvaneza, who is retired, is cuurently undergoing medical attention at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital after escaping death by a whisker.

Rev. Munvaneza, who was dripping blood, told police that he was hacked by his 23-year-old son called Bosco Arinda on Wednesday afternoon. 

Rev. Munvaneza said he was sitting together with other with other residents at Murimba primary school waiting for surveyors to survey his land in Nyabigori village, Kitooma parish when Arinda attacked them with a panga.

He said that Arinda started insulting residents asking why they want to buy his father’s land.

“I tried to explain to my son who was armed with a panga but he attacked me and hacked me on the head, face and back.”

Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, Elly Maate, said that Munvaneza was saved by residents who overpowered Arinda and grabbed the panga from him.  

He said Munvaneza is admitted at Kabale Regional Referral hospital for treatment while Arinda is locked up at Kabale Police Station for interrogation. 

Maate says preliminary investigations indicate that Arinda was under the influence of Marijuana and alcohol when he attacked his father.

Maate noted that the suspect faces charges of attempted murder once police investigations are complete under SD/74/21/08/2019. 

However, when asked why he wanted to kill his father, Arinda said that Rev. Munvaneza was selling the land to one of the residents and they had converged to write an agreement yet he had warned him never to do so.
