The Prime Minister of Uganda Dr Ruhakana Rugunda on Sunday night convened an emergency meeting aimed at drumming out quick response  solutions to an invasion of desert locusts in the country.

Commenting about the meeting, the Prime Minister tweeted thus;”I have called an emergency meeting of relevant political leaders& technical officers @OPMUganda at 7pm tonight to immediately swing into action with the preparedness interventions we have been planning to deal with #DesertLocusts.”

Rugunda’s emergency meeting followed reports  from Kalita sub-county in Amudat District,  that Locusts had entered Uganda.

The report was confirmed by Col. Ezra Byaruhanga, the Commander 407 Bridgade.

“They are very destructive to crops. They can destroy over 190kg of vegetation in two days.

The invading locusts are so horny and reproduce very quickly

They reproduce so quickly since they are sexually active,” said an official from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, who preferred anonymity.

However, Ugandans have devised a solution  for the locust invasion, whereby instead of waiting for government to spray the insects, they have vowed to eat them like they do to their brothers and sisters, the grasshoppers (Nsenene).

Ugandans have vowed to eat the desert locusts

Remember these were seen in the Bible when they invaded Egypt during Pharaoh’s regime when he had refused to release Moses and Israelites; God sent them as a sign of punishment and they caused drought in Egypt by eating all crops and plants.

However, another analyst suggested that government should put in place a comtigency fee for buying these locusts, such that they can create employment for thousands of jobless youth.

Youth can make money by hunting and killing locusts if government agrees to buy them

The analyst wrote on social media thus; “My suggestion to fight these Locusts is simple..Since they prove to be very dangerous, let the government buy each Kilogram of locusts at 50,000/=instead of spending billions in buying helicopters and chemicals to spray them..YOU WILL SEE..Ugandans will hunt them even from Kenya..and this will create employment to those asking what next…we could be done in just hours and the locusts will regret coming to Uganda……”

It  should be noted that government last week released Shs15Bn to the Ministry of Agriculture to help fight these locusts, although the Ministry is yet to reveal the strategic plan they intend to implement on fighting the pests.

However, by press time, reports coming in indicating that the locusts had reached Karamoja and were spreading towards other parts of eastern Uganda, although the line ministry was doing everything possible to respond to the invasion so as to contain it.
