Public Transport Faces Suspension Over Increasing COVID-19 Infections

By Spy Uganda

Kampala: With the increasing COVID-19 infections in Uganda, Works and Transport Minister Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala has warned that any time from now, public transport operators could face suspension over failure to observe Ministry of health guidelines.

Katumba warned that, to prevent suspension, public transport operators should ensure that travellers wear facemasks and sanitise their hands before allowed to board.

On the other hand, boda boda riders are instructed to register details of their passengers just like President Museveni previously ordered to enable health workers trace them in case the riders tested positive.

“Fellow Ugandans, it has come to my attention that some taxi operators and motorists are not obeying the #COVID19 guidelines in place. With the increasing cases of community transmission, we may be forced to halt public transport.” Gen Wamala tweeted on Monday.

These come after increasing infections of COVID-19 cases in Uganda since June, when government eased restrictions and allowed public transport to resume.

Previously, Minister for Kampala Affairs Ms,Betty Amongi, warned that the the increment of COVID19 in Uganda are led by arcades traders, public and private transport operators, who have failed to observe Ministry of Health guidelines.

“We have had 50 percent increase in Kampala and these are open and among these, two have registered two cases of COVID-19”

Amongi added “Majority of the people who have tested positive have either moved in taxis or used boda bodas and in this area, tracking has become very complicated because same taxis usually take three or five.”

These came after Uganda on Sunday registered 66 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number of cases to 1, 500 that included 30 alerts from Kampala, six from Namisindwa, seven from Wakiso, 10 from Tororo, Moroto, Katakwi, Buikwe, Bukwo, Bundibugyo, Mbale, Isingiro, Hoima and Buliisa.
