The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, on Tuesday evening welcomed Muslim Members of Parliament-elect and other distinguished guests to her Nakasero residence for an iftar dinner, reaffirming Parliament’s commitment to interfaith harmony and national cohesion during the holy month of Ramadan.

The annual gathering, now a cherished tradition, was co-hosted by her husband, Moses Magogo, and brought together legislators, religious leaders and members of the Muslim community for prayers and the shared breaking of the fast.

The evening commenced with special prayers led by Sheikh Hadad Tandiya, the County Sheikh of Bombo Twale, who emphasized Ramadan as a sacred season of reflection, forgiveness, generosity and unity among believers.

Over the years, the Speaker has used the iftar platform not only for fellowship but also as a forum to address key issues affecting the Muslim community. During a similar engagement last year, she urged leaders to pursue dialogue and reconciliation amid internal divisions.
“Ramadan came at a time when divisions were threatening to tear the Muslim community further apart. As Parliament, we take great concern but encourage you to resolve outstanding issues amicably,” she said then, underscoring the importance of peaceful engagement.

Beyond calls for harmony, Speaker Among has consistently advocated for greater support to vulnerable communities and championed the development of Islamic banking in Uganda as a pathway to financial inclusion, particularly for citizens seeking faith-compliant financial services.

This year’s iftar once again reflected Parliament’s outreach to faith communities, reinforcing shared national values of compassion, solidarity and reconciliation. The gathering at Nakasero stood as a powerful symbol of unity, as leaders from different backgrounds came together in the spirit of Ramadan to strengthen bonds of faith and nationhood.
