RDC Destroys Mayor’s Coffee Plantation In Wetland

Sheema: The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Sheema district Frank Kyerere  on Tuesday  destroyed a coffee plantation belonging to Kitagata Town Council mayor Robert Atwine and  the LCIII Councilor Richard Kasoso.

Rusindura wetland

Kyerere accuses the two of allegedly planting coffee in a wetland. He immediately ordered them to vacate Rusindura Wetland where they had also planted  other crops, including bananas. Kyereere did this during an operation facilitated by Uganda Citizens Alliance, a (NGO) Nongovernmental organisation operating in greater Bushenyi, which aims at protecting Kitagata River from being contaminated.

It is alleged that Orusindura Wetland in Kitagata town council is severely degraded because of encroachers like Atwine Robert and Kasoso, who went beyond the boundary stones put in place by National Environmental Management Authority  and planted crops like coffee and bananas which is against the NEMA Act. Atwine declined to comment about the saga after the uprooting of both his banana and coffee plantations. The RDC said he will return to Rusindura wetland at the beginning of July to find out if the encroachers have cut down all the crops they had planted in the wetland.
