The Kiwanuka family is in mourning following the sudden death of Nsereko Kyamukungubya “Kyamu” Kiwanuka, the 34-year-old son of prominent businessman Mohan Kiwanuka and former Finance Minister Maria Kiwanuka.

Nsereko was found dead on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, inside his apartment in Washington, D.C., in what authorities and relatives believe was a sudden heart attack.

According to family sources, Nsereko had spent the Monday public holiday indoors. When he failed to show up at work the following day, concern mounted. A family friend contacted police, who forced their way into his apartment. Inside, they found him unresponsive, with the television still on his favorite sports channel — a haunting detail of his final hours.

A preliminary post-mortem report confirmed that he had suffered a heart attack.

A Rising Career Cut Short

Nsereko had recently completed his Master’s in Business Administration at the University of Denver and was beginning a new chapter of his life as a financial advisor for a U.S.-based real estate firm. His competence quickly impressed his employers, who confirmed his probation two months ahead of schedule.

“He was excited, really excited. He had finally found his rhythm abroad,” a relative said.

Before relocating, Nsereko had worked at dfcu Bank in Uganda, where he built a strong reputation in finance. As Pinnacle Relations Manager, he managed a portfolio worth about $10 million and spearheaded client-onboarding frameworks that attracted more than 150 cash-based traders into the formal banking system. His initiatives boosted revenue by 35 percent and increased customer satisfaction by 50 percent.

Colleagues remember him as “dedicated, passionate, and highly self-driven.”

The death of Nsereko adds to an already difficult season for the Kiwanuka family. Less than a month ago, they buried two other senior family members — Rhoda Nakibuuka Nsibirwa Kalema and Nnaalongo Margret Kiwana, the mother of Maria Kiwanuka.

His uncle, Owek. Robert Wagwa Nsibirwa, the Second Deputy Katikkiro of Buganda, confirmed that arrangements are underway to repatriate the body to Uganda for burial.

Despite living abroad, Nsereko remained closely connected with his family and friends. “He was living alone, yes — but he was not isolated. He kept in touch. He was happy,” the family said in a statement.

The news of his passing has sent shockwaves through Kampala’s business community, the Ugandan diaspora, and those who knew him personally. Many remember a young man full of promise, whose life ended just as it was beginning to flourish.
