Telecom giants MTN was in the years past the biggest sponsor of Nyege Nyege cultural festival.
However, this year, MTN decided to pull out as main sponsors, ceding ground for other sponsors like Bell Lager, Uganda Waragi, etc.
But secrets why MTN decided duck away from Nyege Nyege, which arguably the biggest annual festival in Uganda, have leaked.
For starters, it should be noted that there was a national standoff between MTN, Internal Affairs minister Gen. Jejje Odong and Ethics minister Fr. Simon Lokodo and MTN, over allegations that partiers at Nyege Nyege festival engage in explicit sexual activity, sodomy, drug abuse, among other hedonistic acts, all in the name of partying.
However, MTN and other Nyege Nyege stakeholders argued that the four day festival is a cultural event that brings together people from all over the world, hence a business opportunity for Uganda in terms of tourism, the hotel and transport industries, among others.
The ministers later relented and allowed MTN to hold the festival. But what partiers at Nyege Nyege festival of both last and this year did to themselves, according to pictures coming in cement minister Lokodo’s words of the indulgences into sexual activity at the festival.
So being a corporate company, MTN decided to distance themselves from Nyege Nyege so as not to soil their image in the business world as sponsors of a four day sex carnival.
But they did not cut ties with Nyege Nyege completely, our Spies have learnt that they have been the driving force behind this year’s Festival too, although they did it behind the scenes through public relation companies in Kampala.
