Buganda Road: Court in Kampala on Monday charged 14 Chinese nationals cum investors with illegal possession of elephant penises, which they allegedly acquired through poaching.
The 14 Chinese had been paraded before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s court on charges of illegal possession of wildlife species and illegal presence in Uganda.
The suspects, whose charges were heard via video conferencing, appeared before Magistrate Miriam Oyo Okello in two separate batches.
The first group comprised of You Jing Dao, Huang Jian, Mao Xue Ming, Mao Ya Jan, Li Ren Zhe, Li Jia Zhao and Lin Yi Ming.
Her lordship Okello read for the accused the charges with the help of an interpreter, Bruce Tumuhimbise.
Prosecution alleges that on March 18, 2020, while at Kireka-Kamuli Lubowa Zone in Kira municipality, the accused were found in illegal possession of 10 pieces of dried elephant penises valued at Shs17.1Bn, six tortoises valued at Shs22.8m and half kilogram of pangolin scales valued at Shs5.7m.
Court also heard that the accused were found keeping tortoises at their residence as pets without permission from the Uganda Wildlife Authority, which is illegal.
The second batch of suspects comprised of Liao Xiao Feng, Chen Xiao Kang, Chen Jun, Yu Wen Jie, Lin Yi Ming, Lin Shao Sheng and Li Jia Zhao, who were charged with unlawful presence in Uganda.
Prosecution told court that the suspects were arrested on March 17, 2020, after the expiration of their entry passes on March 3, 2020.
It is also alleged that they had started engaging in private business by forming food processing and scrap dealing firms without valid work permits, certificate of permanent residence or special passes.
All the a fore mentioned suspects pleaded not guilty to all the charges and were further remanded to Kitalya Government prison until May 21 as investigations continue.
This website has established that the accused are part of the 37 Chinese who were remanded on March 27 to Kitalya Prison on charges of illegal possession of hundreds of sim cards among others, although state prosecutors, Annet Tuheisomwe and Ivan Kyazze later amended the charge sheet to introduce new charges against the 14, among them illegal possession of elephant penises!
We have since learnt that elephant penises are one of the most expensive delicacies in China and they sale like hot cakes, only affordable and eaten by the wealthy Chinese.
