Three individuals have been remanded by the Makindye Magistrates Court over allegations of illegally taking over and selling part of a deceased person’s estate in Wakiso District.
The suspects, identified as Male Umar, Nsereko Hood Mukasa Ssembatya, and Namboze Janat Nsubuga, were arraigned following a joint operation by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, Criminal Investigations Directorate, and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
They face multiple charges, including intermeddling with the estate of a deceased person, forcible entry, malicious damage to property, eviction of lawful occupants, destruction of crops, theft, and trespassing on burial grounds.
Prosecution alleges that between 2024 and 2025, the accused, along with others still at large, unlawfully and violently took control of approximately four acres of land located at Ndejje-Lubugumu in Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality. The land is said to belong to the estate of the late Ibrahim Katerega.
According to investigators, the group evicted lawful occupants without a court order and destroyed crops and homes, in some cases demolishing structures with property still inside. They are also accused of stealing belongings with the help of armed individuals reportedly wielding machetes and sticks.
Authorities further allege that the suspects fenced off parts of the land, including burial grounds, effectively denying rightful beneficiaries access to the estate.
Investigations indicate that the accused went on to sell about three acres of the land without obtaining legal authority or letters of administration.
The court remanded the trio until April 29, 2026, as investigations continue and efforts intensify to apprehend other suspects still at large.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on illegal land grabbing and protecting the property rights of citizens, particularly in cases involving vulnerable estates.
