Former Mukono District Speaker, Betty Hope Nakasi, has been remanded to October 21, 2026, after appearing before the Anti-Corruption Court on charges of corruption.
Nakasi was arraigned before court this afternoon by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
Prosecution alleges that on June 30, 2025, at the Mukono District Local Government Headquarters, Nakasi, together with other individuals who are still at large, solicited Shs2 million from the then Procurement Officer of Buikwe District.
According to the allegations, Nakasi claimed that she could use her influence over the Mukono District Service Commission to help the officer secure a promotion to the position of Senior Procurement Officer at Mukono District, in exchange for the money.
Following her appearance before the Anti-Corruption Court, Nakasi was remanded until October 21, when she is expected to return to court.
Her arrest and prosecution stem from ongoing investigations into allegations surrounding the illegal sale of government jobs within Mukono Local Government.
The investigations were reportedly triggered by complaints of extortion allegedly involving some members of the Mukono District Service Commission and politicians in the district.
The State House Anti-Corruption Unit has intensified investigations into such allegations as part of efforts to combat corruption and the illegal monetisation of public employment opportunities.
The case also comes amid repeated government warnings against the practice of demanding money from citizens in exchange for government jobs or promotions.
Authorities have maintained that recruitment and promotion into public service positions should follow established procedures and merit-based processes, rather than personal influence or financial inducements.
Nakasi will remain on remand as investigations and the court process continue. The allegations against her remain subject to determination by the court.
