Four suspects have been arraigned before the Wakiso Chief Magistrate’s Court on charges related to a fraudulent scheme in which an elderly man was allegedly conned out of Shs170 million under the guise of multiplying his money.

The suspects—Sendi Jamil, Juuku Anderson, Namuli Fatuma and Nalunjogi Jamilah—were on Wednesday presented in court by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit in liaison with the Criminal Investigations Directorate and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

They face charges of theft, possession of papers intended to resemble currency notes, and conspiracy to commit a felony.

Prosecution alleges that during February 2026, the accused and others still at large orchestrated a scheme in the areas of Bulenga and Buloba in which they targeted Ssekagya James, an elderly resident who had recently sold his land.

According to investigators, the suspects convinced the victim that they had the ability to “multiply” his money by converting it into United States dollars. Believing the claims, Ssekagya reportedly handed over Shs170 million to the group.
However, authorities say the suspects instead gave him counterfeit notes disguised as foreign and local currencies.

Investigations further revealed that the suspects were found in possession of counterfeit currency from different countries, including printed notes resembling United States Dollar, Pound Sterling and fake Uganda Shilling notes without lawful denominations.

The recovered counterfeit currency—mainly in Shs20,000 and Shs50,000 bills—reportedly totaled more than Shs45 million and had already been handed to the victim as part of the fraudulent scheme.
Court remanded the suspects to custody until March 18, 2026, as investigations continue and efforts intensify to track down other individuals believed to be involved in the scam.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant against fraudsters who claim to multiply money, warning that such schemes are criminal and often target vulnerable victims.
