A student of Uganda Christian University (UCU) Mukono drowned in a swimming pool on Thursday evening as he tried to swim under the influence of alcohol.
It is alleged that Nathan Kamanzi, who was in a drunken stupor, drowned after he attempted to swim in a pool at Hasteh Royale Hotel, in Kilowooza, Mukono district, but failed and instead started swallowing water. By the time rescuers pulled him out of the swimming pool he had already died.
Spy Uganda has leanrt that prior to going to the swimming pool Kamanzi had played football wiht fellow students at the University, after they decided to go and swim, not knowing that be his last day on earth.
However, his death came as a shock to the UCU community since many of his friends admit they had seen him in the morning in cheerful spirits, only to learn about his unfortunate demise in the evening.
The hotel management and a few eyewitnesses told police that Kamanzi had taken some alcohol with friends before diving into the swimming pool.
The University Police informed our reporters that they are carrying out investigations to ascertain circumstances under which Kamanzi died and they have so far arrested the swimming pool attendant, because he was not at the scene during the time Kamanzi and friends were swimming.
A statement released by the Office of the Guild General Secretary at UCU Moses Bakashabaruhanga about Kamanzi’s death reads thus;
